BDCM-B-Week21-BCL: Weekly Holiday for Shop, Restaurant and Theater


If you runs or employed in shops, restaurant or theatre, this is another good read for you. In Malaysia, shops, restaurant or even theatre (cinema for an example) it seems to be the business need to be run whole day long with 7 days in a week. However just like in the employment act (https://bdcmplt.blogspot.com/2020/01/bdcm-b-week20-bcl-employment-act-1955.html) you may earn a rest day but it is named as weekly holiday and under this act name Weekly Holiday Act 1950 and it only applies on Peninsular Malaysia.

All shops are required to close either Friday or Sunday (depending to your manager or proprietor) with the exception of shops listed on this table:-

Newspaper making/ delivery
Religious business
Vehicle spare part
Ingredients or food delivery
Pawnbroker
Vehicle workshop
Hotel’s pub
Barber & hairdresser
Funeral related business
Laundries
Tailor
Pharmacy
Business within military bases
Business within  airport
Shipping related in Port
Nursery & pet shop
Business within railway station
Livery stables or garages
Supermarkets
Business within hotel
Ice business
Cooking gas cylinders delivery
Business within shopping mall

If you insist to have your shop open on the Friday or Sunday for business, only proprietor is allowed to attend to the customers. Proprietor here can mean husband, wife and the children of the proprietor.

Under this law, you are required to at least close your shop for 5 times within a year. Don’t know which 5 days to choose?
